This puzzle uses one rule throughout: count the points where the lines intersect.
The challenge
Three patterns are shown in sequence. The first is a grid-like shape, the second is a simple cross, and the third is a smaller grid. The task is to work out the number represented by the final pattern using the same logic as the first two.
The confirmed values are:
First pattern: 9Second pattern: 1Third pattern: ?How to check the pattern
The pattern is based on intersections, not the number of lines or the number of squares.
In the first grid-like shape, counting every place where a vertical and horizontal line cross gives 9 intersections.
In the cross, there is only 1 intersection, so its value is 1.
Apply the same rule to the smaller grid in the third pattern: count each crossing point once.
The solution
The smaller grid has 4 intersections, so the correct answer is 4.
